How does scanning work?

Scans look at files, running processes, the boot sector and other parts of your computer to look for viruses and spyware. This is generally done by looking in each file for an actual virus or spyware. A quick scan looks at the most common places that are infected by viruses and spyware while a full scan checks every file on the PC.

How does Norton Security Scan co-exist with other Symantec software?

Norton 360, Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus are all products that are constantly monitoring your PC for viruses and spyware. The always on or real time protection integrates with your Windows operating system to detect and remediate viruses and spyware as they infect a PC and before any damage is done. It is the integration with the operating system that causes conflicts and prevents the co-existence of two different security software on the PC. Norton Security Scan does not integrate with the operating system to provide real time protection against viruses and spyware, but instead scans your hard drive for viruses and spyware "on demand", or at a given point in time. It only removes viruses when they are found during a scan, and does not remove them from the PC at the time of infection. It is the lack of real time protection (and integration between Norton Security Scan and the operating system) that ensures that Norton Security Scan can co-exist with other Norton products.
